Aws Summit 2017

Aws Summit 2017 in London has brought out some interesting new features but not really new things for database industry.
I spoke with some famous Aws sponsors like DataDog, Skipjaq, and Rackspace. All of them were offering Cloud services and I learned that they have started to provide services hosting data on their clouds.
These are the companies that I got on with because their have good services, I’m not going to use them later on but it is worth to mention what their are trying to achieve.
Bringing in the cloud your applications and databases, you are losing control of where the data are physically
I believe some aspects of using the cloud is how you want to migrate to the cloud having a short period of downtime and how you overlook your statistics and the securities.

Monitoring

One of the most widely used monitoring dashboards is undoubtedly the one provided by (DataDog)[https://www.datadoghq.com], it uses the power of AI to figure out which is the normal statistic pattern and spots any anomaly. IT tracks, monitors and alerts in case of problems.

Security

Firstly, I spoke with the engineer of (CloudCheckr)[http://cloudcheckr.com/] and they provide integrated security configuration and activity monitoring for Aws. I think they do a good use of Trust Advisor Service and have some automated configuration and security checks. Secondly, I like to mention the (Dome9)[https://dome9.com] company, their security approach is doing a granular control over IAM users, roles and actions. Another their feature is to give access management based on Principle of Least Privilege (POLP)

Storage

I met this year for the first time (Scality)[http://storage.scality.com/], they enable enterprises and cloud service providers to run Pbyte-scale, data-rich services like web applications, VOD, active archives. The RING is software so you can deploy it on your server. It acts has distributed system.

Data Replication

A thing that I can not cope with is the trust in the single cloud provider, even though they have high availability and cross-region replication, still, my data are under the same company. My point of view, it is that you have your data replicating somewhere else either on-premises or another cloud vendor. (WANdisco([https://www.wandisco.com/] data replication does something similar, WANdisco Fusion provides continuous consistent access to changing data anytime and anywhere with no downtime and no disruption. It is recommended in case of a cloud migration They claim that can seamless migrate from different locations data.

Performance Optimization

Even if this is not my working field, I’d report (Skipjaq)[https://www.skipjaq.com/] a company that does application performance using machine learning and automate to tune untouched and unloved stack setting and giving a turbo to your application

Database

As last year, (MongoDB)[https://www.mongodb.com] was present at this event, but they have released MongoDB Atlas a database as a service. It provides high availability, security and high performance allowing you to focus on building your applications. They started to have they own cloud providing DaaS. A big benefit is they look after your database updating and giving you the best support needed for achieving the best performance. mongoDB.com/cloud

Talks

I’ve followed the listed talks. Nothing really new from DynamoDB talk. Also It doesn’t belong to my widely knowledge but serverless solutions are going to be heavily used very soon therefore I think it is worth getting on with it a bit. Then Redshift is a good alternative to other data warehouse. The best one was the Life at Aws where some of the most important Aws chief and evangelist told us how it has been their life in Aws company.
